Background/Hypothesis
The surgical robotic system is superior to traditional laparoscopy in regards to 3-dimensional images and better instrumentations. Robotic surgery for hepatic resection has not yet been extensively reported. The first robotic-assisted laparoscopic formal right hepatectomy in China was performed at our institution in July 2009. This video will show the pertinent steps to perform a robotic-assisted laparoscopic formal right hepatectomy.

Materials & Methods
A 53-year-old man with right-sided intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma was referred for surgical treatment. The robotic-assisted laparoscopic formal right hepatectomy was performed. Liver mobilization and cholecystectomy were performed in the usual fashion. After dissection and division of the right hepatic artery, right portal vein and right hepatic duct, parenchymal transection was performed with harmonic curved shears and bipolar electrocautery…

Results
The operative time was 600 min, and the blood loss was 500 ml, with no blood transfusion. The postoperative periods were uneventful, with discharge on days 6. The surgical resection margins were free of tumor.

Conclusions
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic formal right hepatectomy is safe and feasible. It should be performed only by surgeons with expertise in laparoscopy and hepatobiliary surgery.
