Dr. Watanabe graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1985, and subsequently joined the Department of Surgery, the University of Tokyo.
In 1995, He was appointed a Research Fellow at John Hopkins University’s Department of Pathology & Oncology. Upon his return in 1998, he was appointed an Assistant in the Department of Surgical Oncology, and later as a Lecturer in the same department in the University of Tokyo.
In 2006, He became a Professor of Surgery in Teikyo University, Tokyo. In 2011, he became a Chief of Surgery in Teikyo University.
Since April 2012, he is a Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology and Vascular Surgery, the University of Tokyo, Japan. Since 2013, he is the vice president of the University of Tokyo Hospital. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery for colorectal tumors.
His research focuses on clinical outcomes after laparoscopic or robotic surgery for colorectal malignancies.
