John B. Martinie, MD, FACS

Dr. John Martinie currently holds the position of Professor of Surgery, Division of HPB Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center, a 1000-bed academic teaching hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.  He earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and subsequently completed his general surgery training at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.  Dr. Martinie then served 4 years in the United States Air Force as a general surgeon and completed two tours of duty in the Middle East and Central Asia in support of combat operations.  He then completed a fellowship in Transplantation and HPB surgery at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal, Quebec.  He spent two years on the faculty at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, as an Assistant Professor, where he initially began developing his experience in both laparoscopic and robotic hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures.  He performed his first robotic procedures in 2006, including distal pancreatectomies and hepaticojejunostomies.  He was recruited to Carolinas Medical Center in 2007, joining Dr. David Iannitti, with the goal of building one of the pre-eminent HPB Surgical Fellowships in North America.  He now has over 16 years’ experience in robotic liver, pancreas, and biliary procedures, over 1200 cases, and one of the largest single-surgeon experiences in the world.  His primary roles in his position are clinical care for patients, and training of surgical residents, and HPB fellows, and the last 3 fellows have each completed their 2-year fellowship with over 140 robotic procedures, and 450 HPB cases overall.  Dr. Martinie also devotes a significant portion of his time teaching and mentoring other fully-trained general and HPB surgeons in robotic HPB procedures.  He has had over 250 surgeons visit Carolinas Medical Center to directly observe live cases, and he has personally proctored well over 200 surgeons.  He teaches advanced robotic HPB courses for Intuitive Surgical at their dedicated training facilities, in Atlanta Georgia, Sunnyvale California, and Houston Texas, as well as other courses.  As part of a very active group of 5 HPB surgeons, as well as fellows, residents, and research assistants, he has numerous publications, book chapters, and videos, many of which are primarily concerned with robotic HPB surgery.  Most recently, Dr. Martinie has begun a new, one-year robotic HPB fellowship designed specifically for surgeons who have already completed a formalized HPB or Surgical Oncology fellowship, with the aim of expanding the field of experienced surgeons outside of North America who perform advanced robotic HPB procedures.
