Ichiro Uyama, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Professor and Chairman, Department of Upper GI Surgery, Fujita Health University at Japan

Dr. Uyama graduated Gifu University, School of Medicine, Gifu, Japan in 1985 and completed a residency in Digestive Surgery at Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. He further pursued specialization in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery including gastric cancer and esophageal cancer, and Endoscopic Surgery and Surgical Oncology. He became Professor and Chairman of the Upper GI Surgery at Fujita Health University in 2006.

Dr. Uyama is internationally recognized for his expertise in minimally invasive surgery for gastric and esophageal cancers. Until now, he performed more than 900 laparoscopic gastrectomies for gastric cancer, and more than 150 thoracoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.

In 2009 he started the robotic surgery for upper GI malignant diseases, and was the first surgeon in Japan to succeed total gastrectomy and esophagectomy using the da Vinci Surgical System. At present, he was only surgeon in Japan to do robotic surgery for digestive diseases.
