Surgical interest began in medical school where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha (highest honors) with Research Distinction.
Today he is Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Baptist Health South Florida and Chief of Surgery at Baptist Hospital of Miami. He is also a member of Baptist Health Medical Group, a network of more than 100 physicians in multiple specialties closely aligned with Baptist Health South Florida. Dr. Gonzalez is a general surgeon with a specialty in laparoscopic, robotic and bariatric surgery. His leadership and pioneering work in robotic surgery has been recognized internationally.
He has presented at national and international medical conferences on bariatric surgery, abdominal surgery, colon surgery and robotic surgery. Dr. Gonzalez is the Founding Program Director of Baptist Health MIS/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship. He has published in medical journals, including The Official Journal of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy, Hernia and Journal of Obesity Surgery.
Dr. Gonzalez is a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and Fellow of American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Gonzalez is a graduate of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed his residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is Associate Professor of Surgery at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University and Voluntary Assistant Professor of Surgery at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
