Dr. Gangemi received his medical degree from University of Magna Graecia (UMG), Catanzaro, Italy and his general surgery certification from University of Padua, Italy. He then moved to the United States to complete his post-doctoral studies on the treatment of diabetes through pancreatic islet transplantation. He then further completed a 5-year residency in general surgery, and received training in robotic and bariatric surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Dr. Gangemi is a board-certified general, bariatric and robotic surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (FASMBS).

The extensive experience and expertise in robotic surgery that Dr. Gangemi acquired as faculty at UIC allowed and continues to enable him to competently manage a wide spectrum of surgical conditions of the gastro-intestinal tract and to achieve excellent outcomes with both primary and revisional bariatric surgery. Dr. Gangemi is a recipient of the 2017 America’s Top Surgeons Recognition Award, presented to him by the Consumers’ Research Council of America for his work in general, robotic and bariatric surgery. He has also been one of the first general surgeons in the United States to receive the individual recognition of Robotic Surgeon of Excellence by the SRC through the Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS) program.

As the medical director of the Surgical Innovation and Training Laboratory (SITL) at UIC, www.sitl.us, Dr. Gangemi has successfully established the first standardized and proficiency-based curriculum in the United States for the robotic training of general surgery residents in 2012.

Furthermore, Dr. Gangemi holds the rank of the Vice-Chairman of Surgery at an independent, nonprofit, community hospital that is affiliated with the University of Illinois Health and Science system (St. Anthony Hospital, Chicago, IL).

Dr. Gangemi is an accomplished investigator with a record of over 60 papers published in peer- reviewed journals. He is also a member of the editorial board of Obesity Surgery, the official journal of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) and actively collaborates with the American College of Surgeons Curriculum Committee to identify novel strategies aiming to advance the surgical simulation field.
